In accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and Indiana Code 4-1-8, applicants for admission and enrolled students are advised that the requested disclosure of their Social Security numbers is voluntary. Students who do not provide the University with their Social Security number will be assigned a special nine-digit number. This number or the Social Security number will be used: a) to identify such student records as applications for admission, registration and course enrollment documents, grade reports, transcript requests, certification requests, and permanent academic records; and b) to determine eligibility, certify school attendance, and report student status. A student who wishes to apply for federal or state grants, loans, or other financial aid programs is required to supply a Social Security number. No student's Social Security number will be disclosed to individuals or agencies outside Indiana University except in accordance with the Indiana University Policy on Student Records.

All non-native English speakers who wish to be considered for financial aid of any type must demonstrate sufficient English proficiency by earning a score of at least 600 (paper test) or 250 (computer test) on the TOEFL.
To be eligible for a teaching assistantship, it is imperative that international students whose native language is not English demonstrate competency in written and spoken English. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you take the Test of Spoken English (TSE) examination as well as the TOEFL.
Each year, the Chemistry Department is able to offer financial aid in the form of a tuition remission and monthly stipend to several international students.Students earn their financial aid by serving as either teaching or research assistants. Competition for these packages is extremely fierce and excellent spoken English skills are essential. In a typical year, only a few applicants from a pool of 200-300 international students receive financial aid. If you are admitted to the program, your acceptance letter will describe in detail any financial award the department is able to make.
The Office of International Admissions also provides information on the application process for international graduate students. This advice will assist you greatly in the application process.
Applicants will be notified of the decision of the Admissions Committee as soon as possible. In a typical year, final notifications are sent out by late April.
You may check the status of your application at any time by sending email to the Chemistry Graduate Office at chemgrad@indiana.edu. Before you email, please consider the time necessary for routing application materials.
Students who are accepted into the Graduate Program are invited to attend our recruiting weekend event held in March or April. We encourage you to visit our Department and our campus to get a first-hand look at the outstanding opportunities here. During the weekend event, students will be given an overview of the curriculum and requirements, meet the faculty, and tour the facilities, along with getting a better feel of graduate student life. This will give you a broader sense of the research opportunities available at IU. If you are unable to attend one of the scheduled weekends, we can arrange an individual visit for you.
All reasonable expenses related to your visit will be reimbursed by the Chemistry Department. Please contact the Graduate Admissions Office for more details or to schedule a visit.
